Matteo Berrettin's father explains their surprise for playing the ATP

Matteo Berrettini will be taking part in the ATP Finals in London for the first time. The Italian was lucky enough to qualify for this season-ending showpiece after Denis Shapovalov defeated Gael Monfils during the Paris Masters. He now becomes the fourth Italian to make into the ATP singles’ best ten ranked tennis players.

Berrettini’s run to this year’s tennis ATP Finals has been incredible. He won two titles in Budapest and Stuttgart. Besides, he made it to the semifinals of the US Open losing to the eventual winner Rafael Nadal. In three of his previous six tournaments, he has made it to the semifinals. With such impressive statistics, the Italian is an unpredictable opponent. There is a possibility he might even upset either Federer or Djokovic in the Bjorn Borg Group matches.

Berrettini’s father, Luca about the Finals

The 23-year-old’s ATP Finals qualification has taken a lot of people by surprise, including his father, Luca. The Italian was only in his second year in the ATP Tours but managed to qualify for this season-ending tournament set to get underway in the 02 Arena from 19th to 18th November.

“With Matteo, we started laughing because we said ourselves, is it true? Are you really playing the ATP Finals? We are very happy for the good and bad moments. It was not always that easy. Each of us understood his tasks, and the most important thing is that Matteo has certainties both on the court and in his family. We need to enjoy those moments,” his father said.

However, the world No.8 is not the only debutant that will be gracing this prestigious tournament. Other debutants who will be competing for this tournament’s price money include, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Daniil Medvedev.

Will Berrettini’s girlfriend Ajla Tomljanovic attend the Finals?

Uncertainties are still surrounding the possibility of Ajla Tomljanovic attending the ATP Finals in London to support her fiancé Matteo Berrettini. It is not clear when the two got into a relationship. The Australian dated Nick Kyrgios for a substantial amount of time before calling it quits. The breakup came after Nick was found having a good time in London with several girls during Wimbledon.

Tennis fans only came to learn of Matteo and Ajla during the previous US Open, where the Croatian was spotted in the Italian box. Besides, pictures of the two lovebirds having a great time in New York surfaced online.

However, it is so early to tell on whether or not Alja will be in London to support his boyfriend. Currently, she is in Australia taking part in the Fed Cup after coming from Europe.
