So far Roger had to cope with nice “tennis enemies” such as Rafa, Nole and Andy. Now the Swiss Maestro has to face a curious (but nasty) opponent.
What happened? A weird guy named ‘Blue Cat Polytheistic Religion Founder 07’ (he could have used a shorter nick name) posted on baidu.com that “On October 6, I plan to assassinate Federer for the purpose of tennis extermination,” (that’s ambitious! He could redirect his efforts toward fighting the poverty instead!)
The post showed also a picture of a decapitated Federer on his knees with a masked executioner in black near him.
“We hope that it was an oral threat only, and the fan won’t take substantive action. However, we have to take it seriously,” said an official. “We have contacted the local police and we will upgrade the level of security for Roger. Meanwhile, we will also protect other players’ security.”
So Federer and his family arrival in Shanghai wasn’t disclosed to the public and as soon as they landed they were transported straight to the hotel.= in full security.
We are sure that nothing will happen, but there are many dumb people around and everybody still remembers when Monica Seles was back stabbed in Hamburg in 1993.
Roger has been always mixed up about going to Shanghai to play this tournament because of the trip, the jet lag etc…. This year he decided to come and play in order to reach a historical 300 weeks record as world no.1. Regarding next year… he has another reason not to come.
