The WTA Finals took place last week as eight of the best female players battled for the Billie Jean King Trophy. Ashleigh Barty won the tournament, defeating Elina Svitolina in the final. However, the season-ending competition witnessed some players suffer injuries, which forced them to withdraw.

Andreescu’s knee injury

Bianca Andreescu had an early exit from the tournament after injuring her knee during a match. The 19-year-old was making her debut in the finals after a break out year. She was playing her second match against Karolina Pliskova when she sustained the injury. The Canadian extended while returning a serve from the Czech player when she heard her knee crack. She tried to continue playing but retired after Pliskova won the first set. She later withdrew from the tournament after undergoing an MRI scan on her knee.

Bianca was super-excited for the tournament

Andreescu’s coach, Sylvain Bruneau, has revealed that the 19-year-old was disappointed with how her season ended. In a recent interview, he said that Andreescu had been looking forward to playing in her first WTA Finals. The Canadian felt confident that she would have advanced to the semifinals in Shenzhen. “She was super-excited to be at the tournament. She really wanted to be in the top four and do even better.” However, she did not proceed past the group stages, losing her first two matches to Simona Halep and Pliskova. Bruneau says that the knee injury she suffered was like a cold shower and that she was disappointed to end the season injured.

The 19-year-old did not play her final group match against Svitolina. Instead, American Sofia Kenin replaced her and lost to the Ukrainian. Andreescu is now concentrating on recovering from her injury and beginning preparations for the next season. Bruneau revealed that her injury was not too serious, and they would be able to begin their pre-season preparations on time. She will take the next couple of weeks to rest and rehab. On her part, the Canadian said she was happy with her season despite her injury in the finals. She won at the Indian Wells Open, Rogers Cup, and the US Open. Her first title major title came against Serena Williams in New York. The victory was historic, as she became the first Canadian to win a Grand Slam singles title. Bianca will end the year in the top ten of the rankings after beginning the year ranked outside the top 100.
