Petrova beats Radwanska to win the 2012 Pan Pacific title in Tokyo

What a surprise and what a fine game from Nadia!

The Russian had an incredible tournament to grab her 12th career title. She defeated 3 top ten players in straight matches to recover an incredible 3-6 1-4 deficit with Errani in the quarter finals to defeat Sam Stosur in straight sets in the semis, and then win this incredible final.

The Final 6-0, 1-6, 6-3

The match with Radwanska was also quite incredible. Nadia even managed to bagel the world no.3 in the first set to record  29-15 points vs the Pole. Then Agnieszka did just the same in the second set. It wasn’t a bagel, but she also won 29 points vs. Petrova’s 15.

So after 1 hour the scoreline was an incredible 0-6 6-1. The third set was a bit more “normal” with Nadia breaking her opponents once without conceding a break point. The deciding break came when the Russian was leading 4-3 thanks also to 2 double faults from Agnieszka.

“I feel amazing. This is the biggest tournament I ever won, and this is a great accomplishment,” said Petrova. “At the beginning of the tournament, I didn’t expect to be here, because I had a back injury, so it’s delightful to be here right now. I used so much energy in the first set and it took a while to get back into the game, and the change of the court helped me a little bit to think about what I needed to do in the third set,”.

Nadia is now 30 years old and you know what? It seems that this is now the best age to play tennis … not to retire!
