Andy Murray began the year struggling with a hip injury that had him contemplating retirement. The 32-year-old had said that he would retire after the Australian Open, citing persistent pain in his hip. He opted to have hip resurfacing surgery in an attempt to save his career. The former world number one had the medical operation in February. He returned to the court in June after a successful rehabilitation period. He won his first singles title of the year last month at the European Open in Antwerp.

Healthy baby boy

At the tournament, Murray revealed that his wife, Kim Spears, was expecting their third child. A few weeks after his victory in Antwerp, Murray is celebrating the birth of his first son. His mother, Judy, revealed that Kim had delivered a “lovely, healthy baby boy.” The couple had their child in London where they reside. Judy stated that she was happy to have a grandson to go along with her two granddaughters. She said she would leave the remaining details to her son who would reveal them in due time.

Murray’s family

Kim and Murray got married in 2015 in the tennis star’s hometown of Dublin. They had their first daughter, Sophia, in 2016. The couple added to their young family in 2017 when they had their second girl, Edie. After winning the European title, Murray joked that he would have to spend more time on tour because his family was growing a little too large. However, he expressed his appreciation towards his wife and said he was excited to have their third child. The three-time Grand Slam champion thanked Kim for her support during his difficult time dealing with the hip injury. He revealed that she had told him to fight for his career and keep playing.

Murray won the European Open in a competitive final against Stan Wawrinka last month. Many in the game were happy to see the British player win his first title since his comeback. Among them was Roger Federer who congratulated him and expressed his happiness on seeing Murray back on tour. The tournament was Murray’s last appearance after playing on the Asian swing to build his fitness. He has said that he will carefully manage his comeback and will not stress his body by playing in too many tournaments. He missed last week’s Paris Masters which was the last ATP 1000 tournament of the year. The 32-year-old will feature for Britain at the Davis Cup this month in Madrid.
