Monfils praises Shapovalov after losing the ATP Finals slot to Berrettini

Monfils was still happy with his season even if he lost the opportunity to qualify for London at the last hurdle

Gael Monfils was trying everything he could to qualify for the ATP Finals in London, and after a furious run, he was 1 win away to get that. However, the Frenchman lost to Denis Shapovalov in the quarterfinal in Paris to miss the qualification by inches.

After losing to Shapovalov, Gael commented:

“it was a very demanding year for me. Obviously proud to be top 10 at the end. And, yeah, I had this small opportunity maybe to qualify for the master, but today I played a way better player than me, so no shame about that.”

Berrettini in London

It will be Berrettini to take full advantage of Monfils’ demise. Matteo is the first Italian to play the Finals since Barazzuti managed to do so back in 1978 in singles. Fabio Fognini and Simona Bolelli qualified for the season’s finale in 2015, but that was in doubles.

Denis played great tennis against the Frenchman and he has now the opportunity to face Nadal for a place in the final in Paris.
