Canadian Bianca Andreescu’s 2019 season ended with a knee injury at the WTA Finals this week. The Canadian began the year ranked outside the top 100. Her success has seen her rise in the rankings and she was fourth in the rankings before the tournament began in Shenzhen. The 19-year-old has struggled with various injuries and withdrew from the tournament on Thursday.

End of Andreescu’s season

Andreescu suffered a knee injury during her match against Karolina Pliskova. She felt her knee crack as she reached to return a serve from the Czech player. The world No.4 tried to play on but retired after the current world number two won the first set. After an MRI scan, the Canadian announced her withdrawal from the tournament. She had played Simona Halep in her first match in Shenzhen. The 19-year-old struggled with a back injury during her match with the two-time Grand Slam champion. Her final match in Shenzhen was against Elina Svitolina. Sofia Kenin replaced Bianca for that match and lost to Svitolina. However, the losses to Halep and Pliskova had already eliminated Andreescu from qualifying for the semifinals.

Take time off and be with my family

After a disappointing end to a spectacular season, Andreescu said she was happy despite the injury. The Canadian is hopeful she will have future appearances at the tournament. The 19-year-old has now switched her attention to planning for her off season. She will take time to rest and heal her injured knee. Bianca will spend time with her family in the next couple of weeks before beginning preparations for the new season. “I‘m definitely going to take time off, be with my family, with my friends, recoup, and then start my pre-season.”

The US Open champion said she will come back stronger in 2020. The 2019 US Open winner was the second player to withdraw from the WTA Finals. Naomi Osaka also had an early exit from the tournament due to injury. The Japanese star suffered a shoulder injury after winning her first match against Petra Kvitova. Osaka and Andreescu were in different groups and were among the favorites to win the tournament. The two played each other for the first time at the China Open last month. Osaka won the quarterfinal match on her way to the title in Beijing. The WTA Finals will continue into the weekend. Belinda Bencic, Ashleigh Barty, Karolina Pliskova, and Elina Svitolina will play in the semifinals.
