Raonic, Tomic advance in Bangkok – 2012 Bangkok Open

The Bangkok Open gets to the quarterfinals with a couple of youngsters making their way to the last eight.

Raonic – Karlovic 7-6 (3) 6-4

Here we had a boom boom game with two heavy servers. As expected, we had a whopping 23 aces in 22 games (14-9 for Raonic). Eventually Ivo Karlovic was unable to conquer a breakpoint to concede the decisive break in the 2nd set.

Karlovic is always a big question mark always giving a very uncharacteristic game to his opponents “I was a little hesitant in the first set, just trying to figure out what I was going to do,” said Raonic. “It’s going to be very different from today against Nieminen, but if I take the focus and intensity from today, I think I will have my opportunities and I think I will be able to create a lot of opportunities.”

Tomic – Sela 4-6 6-3 6-4

This was a completely different game as both players are not huge servers, but they are good returners. So we had only 4 aces (all coming from Tomic)  and 25 break points (on 29 games…. a lot). Finally it was Tomic to win this battle in 2 hours and 22 minutes.

“He played pretty good,” said Tomic. “I didn’t play aggressive enough, but it’s difficult to play aggressive against a player like that. He plays very, very different tennis, like me, slicing a lot, so it’s not comfortable to play against.”
