I heard a crack in my knee. ANDREESCU INJURY

Bianca Andreescu’s debut campaign at the WTA Finals in Shenzhen has been disappointing. The Canadian was confident about her chances after a breakout tennis season. Her three WTA titles this year have seen her rise to fourth on the rankings. However, injuries have plagued the 19-year-old Canadian in Shenzhen.

Andreescu struggles in Shenzhen

Her first match at the tournament was against Simona Halep. The two served up a thrilling three-set match in their first-ever meeting. The Romanian lost the first set but fought back to win the match. Andreescu struggled with a back injury and had to receive medical attention after the second set. However, she did not move comfortably on the court and lost to the Romanian. The Canadian played Karolina Pliskova in her second match. The 19-year-old suffered a knee injury during the match while returning a serve. She received treatment for the injury but could not continue. Bianca retired from the match after Pliskova won the first set.

Bianca heard her knee crack

Speaking after the match, Andreescu described the severity of the knee injury. “I stepped weirdly on a return. I heard my knee crack. It kind of went inwards.” The 19-year-old said she was unable to put pressure on her knee after the incident. She could barely bend her knee and was in some pain. Her coach Sylvain Bruneau advised her against pushing too hard after the injury. Bianca continued playing for some time and tried to fight through the pain. However, after Pliskova won the first set, she threw in the towel. The US Open champion said that she listened to her body which was telling her to stop. She will undergo an MRI scan to find out the damage caused by the knee injury.

While Andreescu has had a breakout year, she has also been susceptible to injuries. She suffered a shoulder injury at the Miami Open this year. The injury sidelined her for much of the grass-court season. She returned in August at the Rogers Cup and went on to win the tournament. The Canadian’s run in Shenzhen will not continue beyond the group stages after her loss to Pliskova. Her remaining opponent in the competition is Elina Svitolina. Svitolina has already qualified for the semifinals after defeating Pliskova and Halep. She will face Andreescu in her next match if the Canadian player is fit to compete. Pliskova will play Halep in the final match. The winner will go through to the semifinal.
