British sensation Laura Robson loses in the Guangzhou Open final

The 18 years old lost to Hsieh Su-wei 6-3, 5-7, 6-4.

It’s a great time for the British tennis. Murray won his first slam and Laura Robson was very close to win her first WTA title (it’s a matter of time). We have to go back to 24 years ago to see a Briton winning a WTA tournament when Sara Gomer won the Northern California Open in 1988. We may have to wait few more months.

What happened?

Hsieh Su-wei – Robson 6-3, 5-7, 6-4

Laura was playing Hsieh Su-wei ranked world no.53 in a very harsh final that lasted 2 hours and 48 minutes. The match was quite interesting with Laura managing to recover a 1 set down deficit to then win the second set and lead 3-0 in the decider. Then it was time for the Taiwanese to strike back and win the last set 6-4. Laura played a good match but with too many imperfections. First she committed a whopping 11 double faults on 15 service games, second she conceded an incredible amount of break points (22!)

“At 3-0 she started playing well again and she made the rallies longer,” Robson said. “In the end I just totally ran out of energy, I kept fighting, but I wasn’t able to hit the shots as hard. “The more matches you play the more experience you get and to play in a really tough final like this is a big experience. Hopefully next time I play in a final I’ll be a little more ready for it, and hopefully it won’t be so humid.”

Great stuff.. apparently we have a “will-be-champion” in the women tennis, waiting for something similar in the ATP…
