Score, report, and key facts
Federer in this set stepped up in great fashion to overplay the Australian and for that reason he won 6-2 after breaking Alex in the 4th (3-1) and in the 8th (6-2) game.
Federer had a pretty good kick start of the set after breaking De Minaur in the 2nd game (2-0) before consolidating his break and lead 3-0. Roger improved his lead after breaking De Minaur in the 8th (6-2) game before winning the set.
At the end of the match, Federer scored 58 points vs. De Minaur’s 38 points.
Roger served pretty well to win 78% of the points (25/32) behind his first serve, and he won 61% points (11/18) on his second serve. Roger won this match even if he had some problems in converting his break points since he converted only 40% (4/10). On the other side, De Minaur wasn’t able to conquer any break point. That was one of the key issues for his defeat.
After this match, the head to head between Federer and De Minaur is 1-0 for Roger.
Soon after the match, Roger commented:
“It was fast but very nice. I think I played a great match. It was a tough opener, in the beginning, the first five games, we had some great rallies. I never looked back. I was great on the offence, made very few unforced errors and came up with the big shots and served well when I had to.
I thought Alex played a great tournament as well, and I think we both can be very happy. But what a moment for me to win my 10th here in my hometown of Basel.”
Will Federer play in Paris?
The big question is now if Roger will compete in the last ATP1000 of the year in Paris. Usually, he disclosed his intentions on Sunday, but this time he decided to wait for another day to comment:
My main goal is to be perfectly fit for London. I was close to big titles this year, Indian Wells, Wimbledon, I’d like to win a big one this year and London is one of those.”
The Swiss has played just a bit more than 3 hours this week and therefore, he should be relatively fresh ahead of a possible campaign in Paris.
