Can Bianca Andreescu can win the biggest prize money in tennis history at the WTA Finals?

The Canadian’s breakout year could get even better with victory in Shenzhen.

Bianca Andreescu made history after she became the first Canadian woman to win a Grand Slam title. The 19-year-old has been in fine form this year and will make her first appearance at the WTA Finals in Shenzhen. This will be the first tournament held in Shenzhen after the finals moved from Singapore.

The record prize money

The winner of the WTA finals could win a record of $4.725 million USD if she goes unbeaten in the tournament. The amount would eclipse the $3.85 million Andreescu took home after her victory at the US Open. Even if the eventual champion wins one round-robin match, she will still walk away with around $4.115 million dollars. Factoring in the singles and doubles players at the tournament, the competition will have a total of $14 million dollars in prize money.

Andreescu is among the favorites to win the record prize money. The Canadian has won three WTA titles this year. Apart from the US Open, the 19-year-old also won the Indian Wells Open in March. She won the tournament after qualifying as a wild card. Andreescu also won the Rogers Cup in her home country. Her success has seen her improve on the WTA rankings. The Canadian started the year ranked outside the top 100. However, she is currently fourth and is the highest-ranked tennis female player in Canada.

In Shenzhen, Andreescu will play in the Purple group. Other players in the group are Karolina Pliskova, Simona Halep, and Elina Svitolina. Andreescu played against Pliskova at the Rogers Cup in August. The Canadian defeated the world number two in the quarterfinals on her way to the title. She also won against Svitolina in the Indian Wells Open. Bianca and Halep will play each other for the first time in Shenzhen. One player who could pose a threat to Andreescu is Naomi Osaka.

The Japanese player was in fine form on the Asian swing of the tour. Osaka won the Toray Pacific Open in Japan and the China Open. Osaka and Andreescu played for the first time in Beijing. The Japanese star came from a set down to win the match. Osaka will play in the Red group which also features Ashleigh Barty, Petra Kvitova, and Belinda Bencic. The finals will begin on October 27th and end on November 3rd.
