Why Federer would be so happy to play Wawrinka in Basel after injury

The 20-time Grand Slam champion is through to the quarterfinals at the Swiss Indoors in Basel would be happy to play against his Swiss compatriot.

Roger Federer has been playing incredibly well at the Swiss Indoors in Basel. The former world number one has won the tournament nine times in his career. The 38-year-old has won three titles this year and is looking to win his 103rd title in his hometown this week.

Federer is through to the quarterfinals after defeating Radu Albot in the round of sixteen. He defeated the Moldovan player 6-0 6-3 to win in a match that lasted for one hour and three minutes. Roger has been in fine form in Basel and had won his opening match against Peter Gojowczyk in fifty-three minutes. The match was his 1500th of his career.

Asked about his potential quarterfinal opponent, the 20-time Grand Slam winner said he would like to face Stan Wawrinka in the next round. The 2014 Australian Open winner will play against Francis Tiafoe on Thursday. Federer would like to play against the 34-year-old to excite the home fans. If Stan defeats Tiafoe, he will set up the 27th meeting with his compatriot in his career. The current world No.3 has dominated the proceedings in most of their matches, winning twenty-three times.

The head to head is 23-3 for the former world no.1 that would be the favorite to reach the semifinal.

Despite his good record over his compatriot, Federer would be happy to play Wawrinka in Basel. “I would relish a chance like this. I’ve always had tough matches against him even though on the hard courts I’ve been good against him. But I think for the fans, this match hopefully happens.” Federer and Wawrinka have enjoyed success when representing their country. The duo won the doubles gold for Switzerland at the 2008 Olympics. In 2014, they led their country to the Davis Cup title. Wawrinka has, however, been struggling with injuries in the last few years.

The three-time Grand Slam champion has been struggling with a knee injury this year. He pulled out of the St. Petersburg Open last month to recover and from the injury. He has been healthy since and reached his first final last weekend at the European Open. He lost the match to Andy Murray in a pulsating final. If Federer gets past his countrymen, he could face Stefanos Tsitsipas in the semifinals. On the other side, American Taylor Fritz knocked out Alexander Zverev, in the third round. The German had defeated Federer at the Shanghai Masters and has a 4-3 winning record over the 38-year-old.
