RETIREMENT. Federer would like to teach tennis with the Rafa Nadal Academy

Federer will continue to play tennis in 2020 but has revealed that he would like to work with Nadal to groom future tennis generations.

Roger Federer will head into his 21st season next year. The 20-time Grand Slam champion has had an illustrious career since turning pro in 1999. The 38-year-old had won three titles this year to take his tally to 102 ATP titles in his career. In recent times, he has had to deal with questions about his retirement as many in the game have speculated that the Swiss player could be in the twilight of his career.

Federer’s reveals his plans after retirement

Federer has addressed the speculation surrounding his retirement. In a recent interview with La Gazzetta, the 38-year-old fielded a question about how much longer he would continue playing. The Swiss maintained that he had not yet decided on the timeline of his retirement. The former world number one will continue to play as long as his family is okay with the decision. However, he revealed that he had an idea of what he would like to do when he stopped playing. “I would like to teach young people tennis. And I’d like to do it with the Rafa Nadal Academy.”

Federer and Nadal friendship

Nadal and Federer enjoy a good relationship. Despite having faced each other in epic matches over the years, they have mutual respect for each other. The two played together for Team Europe in the Laver Cup last month. At the tournament, they appeared comfortable together and even coached each other during matches. Roger was also a guest during the unveiling of the Rafael Nadal Academy in 2016.

The 20-time Grand Slam champion praised the Spaniard for his dedication to the project. He also said that the 19-time Grand Slam champion was a role model for his community. Federer was also impressed with the facility and suggested that he would send his kids to the academy if they ever wanted to play tennis.

Federer not going to Nadal’s wedding

Fans will be hope to see Nadal and Federer work together after they retire from the game. For now, Rafa is concentrating on embarking in a new stage in life. The Spaniard will get married to his fiancé Xisca Perello this weekend. The current world No.3 will not attend his friend’s wedding ceremony. He will, instead, play in the Basel Indoor championships. The Swiss player had committed to playing in his hometown and the wedding date coincided with the beginning of the tournament. Some of the guests expected at Nadal’s wedding are Cristiano Ronaldo and Enrique Iglesias.
