Roger Federer has always had a good relationship with his parents. Robert and Lynette were supportive of their son’s career. While they try to leave him to his affairs, they also sometimes go with him to his tournaments.
The Swiss tennis icon’s parents, in fact, are currently in Shanghai to watch their son play in the Shanghai Masters. Federer said that he is happy that he is traveling with his parents because they rarely do it together.

He revealed that it was his father’s first time in China. It looks like Robert enjoyed the city a lot because he already requested his son to join next year’s Shanghai Masters so he can come back to the metropolis. Federer, of course, humored his father and promised that he will do his best to qualify for next year’s event.
Lynette, on the other hand, had already been to Shanghai twice. She first went to Shanghai in 2002 during the ATP Finals (then known as Tennis Masters Cup). Back then, it was the first time that the year-end singles finals event was done in China. She also visited the city in 2005 when the world finals event was brought back to Shanghai after two consecutive years in Houston.
Roger also divulged that it seemed that his parents are on an Asian tour. Before Shanghai, Lynette and Robert were in Singapore to visit Roger’s sister. They will also accompany their son when he visits Tokyo next week for endorsement commitments.
Enjoying Shanghai
Aside from watching their son’s games, Federer’s parents have also been exploring Shanghai. They said that they have been enjoying the sightseeing part of their trip. It was also his father’s first time to see the site and the center court, which made him more excited.
Federer, for his part, seemed to be enjoying his time in the city. Before the tournament, he impressed crowds when he shot basketball with a local team. He also made fun of friend Alexander Zverev on Twitter for accidentally losing grip of his racket during a game. The racket flew into the crowd and landed in the audience area.
Next match vs. Goffin and then probably Zverev and Thiem
Meanwhile, it looks like Federer’s journey to a Shanghai Masters title may be difficult. His next match will be with Belgian star David Goffin, who he has faced multiple times. The Swiss tennis icon actually leads the Belgian in the FedEx ATP Head2Head series 9-1. Goffin, however, notably defeated 20-time Grand Slam winner in the 2017 Nitto ATP Finals so he should still be a credible threat.
If Federer manages to slay Goffin in their match, he will have two more giants to face in the next pre-final rounds. He could face Zverev in the quarterfinals while Austrian player Dominic Thiem will be in the court with him in the semifinals.
