Naomi Osaka and Bianca Andreescu, as young players who won the last two U.S. Open finals, are bound to be compared to the tennis legend that is Serena Williams. For one, both of them handily defeated Williams during their respective face-offs in Flushing Meadows. Both of them also started their rise in the world rankings as teenagers. But perhaps most interestingly, the two also expressed interest in becoming the next icon in female tennis.
Bianca Andreescu said she wants to be better than Serena
The 19-year old star acknowledged that she has some similarities with Williams when it comes to the playing style that she uses. Just like the tennis icon, Andreescu also has an aggressive playing style, where serving plays a huge role in the game play. She also admits that at one point in her life she strived for a career like Williams, pointing out the legend’s charity work as well.
While she said that Williams was an idol of hers as a young tennis player, Bianca is determined to carve her own mark. In fact, she even claims that she has the potential to become better than the 23-time Grand Slam champion.
Bianca commented:
“I’m sure I’m not the only person that’s looked up to her. She’s an inspiration to many, many people, not only athletes. What she’s done off the court, too. She’s truly a champion. But, yeah, I’ve really strived to be like her. Who knows? Maybe I can be even better.”
Naomi Osaka like Serena Williams
Naomi Osaka, on the other hand, is on a rebound after a pretty inconsistent few months. The 21-year old, who had a rough record after winning the Australian Open in January, just bagged the championship title of the Pan Pacific Open and the China Open in the past few weeks.
Her Beijing stint was particularly impressive because she was able to defeat Andreescu and world no. 1 Ashleigh Barty during the tournament. Her China Open victory gave her the chance to rise back to the top 3 in the world rankings.
Osaka, reflecting on the pressures she faced when she reached the peak of the world rankings, said that she understood now what top players like Williams and Federer once faced.
She talked about the need for consistency in her performance. She particularly points to Federer, who she thinks was able to show how a consistent gameplay throughout his career. She also would like to achieve William’s dominance in the tennis courts when she was world no. 1.
Serena chasing Margaret Court’s record
On the other hand, Williams will restart her campaign to win her 24th Grand Slam title in January for the Australian Open. If she wins one of the four Grand Slams next year, it will give her equal footing with Margaret Court in the record books for having the most Grand Slam titles. Williams almost came close to winning a title four times in the past two years, reaching the finals in London and New York for both years.
