Roger Federer’s performance in the past few tournaments has been hampered by injuries. The tennis icon, who is celebrating his 21st year as a pro player, had to play the US. Open last month with a back injury. This is said to be one of the main reasons why he crashed out of the tournament, losing to Bulgarian player Grigor Dimitrov in their fourth-round match.
INJURY. Federer now pain-free
Fortunately for his fans, the Swiss Maestro is back at his peak form as he said that he has already fully recovered from the injury. Speaking about the preparations he did for the Shanghai Masters, he confessed that the length of time that he had to endure the back injury surprised him. It took him ten days to heal, which was longer than he previously anticipated.
The Swiss also reported that he is well-prepared to take on his opponents in the Shanghai Masters as he is now free from pain. He said that he was already back to his “100%” in last month’s Laver Cup due to the recovery and the short break he had. In fact, he helped lead Team Europe to win in Geneva in that tournament.
That said he does not anticipate an easy road to the championship in Shanghai. He described the draw in the Chinese tournament as being “tough.” But he still expects to finish strong in the event.
Meanwhile, the Swiss tennis star is looking to boost his Race to London rankings with his participation in the Shanghai Masters. The tournament, which is the penultimate Masters 1000 event in the ATP calendar, will be his best chance to score his next title as his friend and rival Rafael Nadal is sitting out. The two people that could foil his chances are his other rival and defending champ Novak Djokovic, and rising ace Daniil Medvedev.
The next few weeks will be crucial for Federer as he builds momentum towards the ATP Finals in November. Before he leads to the London’s O2, he is also set to make stops in Basel’s Swiss Indoors and the Paris Masters.
Federer’s first Shanghai Masters match
In related news, Roger will begin his Shanghai campaign with a match against Spanish player Albert Ramos-Vinolas. The 38-year old Swiss was set to battle former world no. 3 Marin Cilic but the Croatian surprisingly lost to Ramos-Vinolas in the opening round.
