Federer, Djokovic to clash in the 2012 Cincinnati final – Preview

We have a dream final in Cinciinati with the top 2 players in the world to try to win the title.

FEDERER – WAWRINKA 7-6 (4) 6-3

That wasn’t an easy match for Roger as Wawrinka was playing really well in Cincinnati. Stanislas made a couple of illustrious victims while getting to the semi (Ferrer and Raonic) and he was in the mood to spoil the party of his friend Roger. It didn’t happen. The world no.1 was able to win the opening set at the tiebreak. An important  point was that Roger was unable to convert any of the 7 break points conceded by Wawrinka. Even if his service was not working very well (4 double faults and only 49% of first serves in), Federer did concede only 1 break point in the opener. The second set was much smoother with Federer breaking Wawrinka twice and win 6-3.

“The goal has already been achieved by getting back there,” said Federer. “I have to look at the long term, and I would like to stay around for as long as I can. For that reason I have to peace myself at times, but I’m happy I’m playing so well again right off the bat again here in the States. Obviously I hope I can keep it up tomorrow and then also in New York.”

“I’m happy with how I’m playing. I could have served a bit better to keep me out of a bit more trouble on my own serve,” Federer said. “Then again, I only had to save a couple of break points. Overall I’m actually pretty happy.”

DJOKOVIC – DEL POTRO 6-3 6-2

Nole is a real warrior. He has been playing so much in the recent weeks and he still manages to destroy important players engaging in very long rallies. That happened again with Del Potro. After the first 2 games dominated by harsh rallies, eventually Nole managed to come through and win the match. The Serb was very effective of converting 3 break points out of six to defend all his break points (6 out of 6).

“I try to step into the court and take my chances. It’s what I have been trying to do in last couple of years,” said Djokovic. “Obviously sometimes it works, sometimes not, but it’s been working quite often for me actually in last two weeks. I’m happy for that. When you are in the situation of break point down, it makes you focus more and makes you be more aggressive. So that’s something that I always look forward to.”

“I had I think six break points in the match and I didn’t take any one. Against Novak or the top players, if you don’t take your opportunities, you will lose for sure. I think he played much better than me today basically in the important moments or the break points. He was too good for me.” Del Potro said.

FINAL PREVIEW

Head to head is 15-12 for Roger. These 2 have already played a final in Cincinnati in 2009 when Federer won 6-1 7-5. If the Swiss wins he will be the only man to have won Cincinnati 5 times. Nole will try to win it for the 1st time.

This match is crucial for the ATP points to decide who is oging to be the world no.1 at the end of 2012. In fact, the winner will get 1000pts vs 600 of the runner-up. This means that this match will give “8oo more” points either to Roger or to Nole.

Whatever the outcome, the Swiss is safe to be ranked as world no.1 for the next 3 weeks (till the end of the US Open).
