What? Ah yes of course now we have the Rogers Cup!!! No it is not a tournament hosted by Federer (that is not going to play it), but one of the major appointments of the season. Last year the men’s tournament was in Montreal, this year in Toronto (it just swaps with the women’s).
Unfortunately this time many top players are not going to compete due to the fatigue of a long grass season. So Federer, Nadal, Ferrer and Monfils pulled out. The organisation was already aware of the problem caused by the Olympics and they have conceved a draw with many bye (16) to give the opportunity to top players to properly recover.
Last year’s winner was Super Nole that defeated Mardy Fish 6-2 3-6 6-4.
The Draw
The top seeds are Djokovic, Murray, Tsonga, Berdych, Tipsarevic, Del Potro, Monaco and Isner.
Djokovic had a good draw to possibly play Tomic in the 1st round, then Nishilori and then Del Potro in quarters. For the third consecutive time the man of the moment (talking about Murray) had another horrible draw to play Raonic in the 3rd round (the Canadian is also quite unlucky recently with his draws) and Isner in the quarters. The good news is that Berdich (that is not playing very well recently) is in his half (better than playing Tsonga at the moment).
The 2012 Citi Open winner, Dolgolopov, had also a bad draw as he will play Stepanek in the 1st round to then be on the collision path with Del Potro (he played a wonderful Olympic Game), Simon/Haas, Djokovic.
The Favorite?
A possible winner maybe a revitalised Murray or an “outsider” (Tsonga or Isner?). Delpo could be quite tired from the Olympics and… ups.. We cannot forget Nole… you know… he is not that bad either!!!
