Federer – Murray final preview – 2012 Olympic Games

Another day, another final at the Centre Court at Wimbledon between these two. It is remarkable how 2011 and the beginning of 2012 it was about a close affair between Nole and Rafa and now it is becoming about Roger and Andy. The Scott was also “badly” sidelined to get in the shadows as the tennis world was talking about the Big 3 and not anymore about the Big 4. Time has changed as Roger and Andy stepped up.

The Rivalry

The Swiss and the Scott have played each other 16 times and they won 8 matches each, but there are interesting insights.

In “major tournaments” such as the  Slams and the Worlf Tour Finals, Roger has a much better record (5-1). The record becomes even better for the Swiss in a best of 5 match as they played each other 3 times and the Maestro won all 3 (and they were all finals) losing only 1 set few weeks ago.

2012 – Wimbledon 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, 6-4 – full coverage here
2010 – Australian Open 6-3, 6-4, 7-6(11)
2008 – US Open 6-2 7-5 6-2

This time it looks a bit different as the Scott should take advantage of his recent experience and the crowd is expected to wildly support him even more than it was in Wimbledon. On top of it, Roger might be quite tired after playing the longest 3 setter match in tennis history, he might be satisfied after winning Wimbledon and too tense to complete his career Golden Slam.

Andy says

“It’s been an amazing month and one of the best of my career,” Murray commented. “The support that I have had over the last month, after Wimbledon, I really needed it. All the times that I have lost in a Grand Slam final, I’ve had a tough time afterward for a few months. But coming here with the motivation of playing in the Olympics and with the support that I have had has been all the motivation that I needed.”

Roger says

“Look, he got amazing crowd support in the Wimbledon finals,” Federer reflected . “I was able to handle that. But there’s never a guarantee. I don’t know how much the crowd, you know, plays into the outcome of the match, really, because he’s such a great player anyway.”

Weather

Yes… in London it is well known to be horrible and also this time it can play a massive role in the final as it was in the Championship few weeks ago. The roof was closed when the score was 1 set each and from that moment on it was game over.

On Sunday the weather forecast is…Chance of Storm!!!
