Smart Federer won’t play the 2012 Rogers Cup

King Roger is arguably one of the best players in tennis history and he is becoming smarter and smarter in his scheduling.

One of the 2011 smartest decision was not to play the Asian campaign after the US Open. That gave him the opportunity to recharge the batteries and start his triumphal march to get back world no.1. After his incredbile win against Del Potro, Roger decided to pull out from Toronto also because… he doesn’t need the points to remain world no.1.

How will Roger still be world no.1 wihout playing in Toronto?

The points at the Olympic Games are as follows

Gold Medal 750
Silver Medal 450
Bronze Medal 340
Loser 3rd/4th 270

So in the worst case scenario for Federer (he loses with Murray while Nole defeats Delpo), Federer will gain 110 points over Djokovic (450-340). Now Federer is +75 (11075 vs 11000), so this means that he will be +185.

Nole won last year’s Rogers cup so he can’t improve his 1000 points, while Federer had a lousy tournament (he lost in the round of 16 to get a meagre 90 points). So in the worst case scenario (Nole wins and Roger does not play), Federer will lose 90 points.

So if the Roger’s worst case scenario materialises, he will still be +95 points over Nole (+185-90).

Even better for Roger that he has to defend only 180 points in Cincinnati (he lost in the quarters the previous year) and 720 points at the US Open (he lost to Nole in 2011) while Nole has to defend 600 points in Cincinnati (final in 2011) and 2000 points at the US Open (he was the winner).

So… another smart move form the Maestro.
