The Olympic games are on, but there is still an interesting tournament in Washington that is taking place.
We have a couple of veterans trying to reach the final: Fish and Haas. Both come from a difficult moment. Mardy had to cope with a huge health scare when early this year his heart was “playing” a strange game by randomly start to beat super fast (problem “fixed”). Tommy is back from a multitude of injuries to play one of his best tennis at 34! This year he has already won a title in Halle (indoor grass against King Roger in the final!) and he lost in the final in Hamburg against Monaco.
FISH – MALISSE 6-3 6-4
In just 80 minutes (and 10 aces) Fish dispatches Malisse to reach the semifinal. Mardy was very effective in converting 2 break points out of 2, while Malisse couldn’t convert any (he also had 2 break points).
Talking about the semifinal with Haas “I expect a really tough match,” said Fish. “He’s a great player, he was as high as two in the world a while ago, but he’s had a bunch of injuries. He seems like he is close to being 100 per cent back with his health. It’s great for him, we are really good friends. It’ll be fun. It’s the reason why I’m out here.”
HAAS – KAMKE 6-1 6-2
The match was an quick one for the German that managed to grab the victory against the world no.107 in 66 minutes.
“It was tough conditions out there today,” said Haas. “We both felt the heat a little bit, and the ball sort of played a little differently. I think for his game, it didn’t really suit him that much. He threw me a lot of unforced errors, but personally I am pretty happy with the way I played things.”
Head to head is 3-1 for Haas. The only match won by Fish was when Tommy retired in Houston when he was 4-1 down. They played each other for the first time in the ATP tour in 2000 in Miami (Haas won 6-2 6-1!). The last was in 2007 in Memphis (Haas won 6-3 6-4).
In the other semifinal Dolgolopov ( 7-6 6-4 on Blake) will play Querrey (6-4 6-4 on Anderson). These two played only once in Sydney 2011 where Dolgolopov won 6-4 6-3.
