Simona Halep triumphs in Montreal

Incredible Simona Halep!

The Romanian sensation wins one of the toughest titles of her career. In fact, the world no.1 reached the final in Montreal after winning 4 matches in 48 hours. In the final, Simona was opposed to an in-form Sloane Stephens that got to the final without conceding a single set on the way.

The final

Simona started exceptionally well after she conquered a 4-1 lead. However, the American managed to come back (4-4), but Simona found the energy to win the following tiebreak after recovering a desperate 0-4 deficit and saving 2 set points when she was 4-6 down.

Sloane managed to bounce back in style in the second set (6-3), and she put up a fight in the decider. Both players were struggling in holding their games also because their second serve was particularly weak (eventually Simona won only 25% points on her second serve, Sloane 23%).

In the end, it was Simona to find the solution to win the contest 7-6 (6) 3-6 6-4 even if she scored fewer points than her opponent (109 vs. 111).

This week was really tough. HALEP

After the match, Simona commented

“This week, it’s been an amazing effort. It’s brutal, the effort for me. This week it was really tough.

[Sloane] makes me play better and better every time we meet each other, that’s a great thing for me. Of course, she’s a strong player. I think she’s a complex if you say in English, complex player. She has everything.”

This is Simona’s 18th career title and the 3rd of this fantastic season. After this week, the Romanian will have consolidated her world no.1 status.
