Shapovalov stages amazing comeback to beat Fognini in Toronto

Denis Shapovalov entertains his fans again!

The Canadian was opposed to an in-form Fabio Fognini in the 2nd round in Toronto. Even if the Italian’s game is more suited for the clay courts, Fognini has been displaying very good tennis, and last week he won the title in Los Cabos on hard courts.

The match

Denis started extremely well against the Italian after he conquered a robust 4-1 lead after breaking Fabio in the 4th game (3-1). The contest was then suspended (rain) in the 8th game, but when the match resumed (after 1 hour), Denis was quick in serving out the set.

After Shapovalov won the opener (6-3), things got awkward for the Canadian in the second set after he won only 4 points in the first 4 games to be 0-4 down in no time. Then it was time for Denis to stage a tremendous comeback and win 4 consecutive games (4-4) after also conceding just 4 points in the previous 4 games.

The end of the second set became a dogfight, and it was Canadian to break Fognini again in the 11th game before winning the contest 6-3 7-5.

Next vs. Haase

Denis will face Robin Haase in the 3rd round. The head to head is 1-0 for the Canadian.
