Kuznetsova wins the title in Washington after saving 4 championship points

Svetlana Kuznetsova may be down in the rankings (128), but the former world no.2 has still the same grit!

The Russian wins her 18th career title in Washington after conquering an incredible final against Donna Vekic 4-6 7-6 (7) 6-2.

4 championship points saved

The key of the match was the end of the second set. In fact, the Russian was 4-6 4-5 15-40 when she started to stage an incredible comeback. After saving 3 championship points in the same game, Svetlana had to repeat herself in the following tiebreaker when she saved another match point when she was 6-7 down. After losing the second set, Donna Vekic lost her focus entirely, and Kuznetsova won the following 5 games (5-0) before conquering the match.

I thought I could turn this around. kUZNETSOVA

After the match, Svetlana commented

“In the second set, each of us holding serve, I was some match points down, I just managed to hang in there. I knew I was close, I could turn it around, but of course, it was really tight in the second set. Then the third set, I felt (she) was really down on herself and she was tired; I felt better, and I found my game.”
