Tsitsipas saves 2 MPs to win amazing opener in Washington

Stefanos beats Donaldson in 3 sets at the Citi Open.

What a match for Stefanos Tsitsipas!

The upcoming Greek was opposed to home favorite Jared Donaldson in his opener in Washington to recover 3 times from a rather bad scoreline.

The match

Stefanos started the match not in the best possible way to be broken immediately in the very first game at 15. Later the Greek lost 4 consecutive games to find himself 1 set and 1 break down (from 3-4 to 3-6 0-2). When the time was running out, Stefanos found the solution to break the American 3 times in the same set before winning 6-3.

Things got extremely complicate for Stefanos in the 3rd set. In fact, even if he recovered a1-break down deficit early in the set, he was broken again in the 9th game (4-5) and Donaldson had the opportunity to serve out the match. The American had even 2 consecutive match points when he was leading 40-15, but he wasn’t able to convert any of those and eventually he was broken. That propelled Tsitsipas that broke Donaldson again after he held his serve. The final score was 3-6 6-3 7-5.

Stefanos will face either the world no. 654 James Duckworth or Jason Kubler (no. 105) for a place in the quarters.
