Denis Shapovalov starts his North American campaign with a tough win. The new Canadian sensation beats Daniil Medvedev in 3 sets in the Washington opener after recovering from a desperate position.
The match
After a not so great start (3-6), Denis recovered with a smashing second set (6-1). At that point, it seemed as the Canadian was poised to get an easy win in the decider, but you’ll never know when on the other side there is Daniil Medvedev. Eventually, the Russian broke Denis in the 4th game (3-1) to consolidate his lead soon after (4-1). However, Shapovalov is well-known for his die-hard attitude, and after a huge fight, he managed to break back the Russian twice in the 7th and final game to conquer 5 consecutive games and win this contest (3-6 6-1 6-4).
Denis will face either Donald Young or Kei Nishikori in the 3rd round.
