Federer defeats Benneteau in style to reach the 3rd round – 2012 Olympics

It was a sort of nightmare few weeks ago when the Swiss Maestro had to recover a horrible 2 sets down against the Benneteau in the 4th round. Federer managed to find a way to win that match (it was also 2 points from defeat), but that was not a nice memory. For this reason Roger was not so confident before playing the Frenchman in the Olympics. Eventually it turned out as a very easy match

First Set

Roger got an early 3-0 lead with Julien struggling to repeat his previous performance. Then the set just cruised to a not-so-tense 5-2 when Roger broke again the Frenchman to win the opener 6-2. The overal impression was that even in the rare moments Roger had doubts about his game, the service was  coming immediately to rescue him (Federer style = bad news for opponents).

Second Set

Roger had again the advantage to be the first to serve to immediately get a 1-0 lead. Then Julien was very effective in saving a break point in the following game to hold his service. Roger won the next game in style giving the impression that sooner or later the match would have gone in his direction (the typical “you struggle to hold your service, it’s easy for me” situation). And that was it…. Roger broke Benneteau in the following game to hold his service once again and lead 4-1 without breaking a sweat. The set finishes 6-2.

Roger will play the next round against either Muller or Istomin. The Maestro has great chances to get to the quarters.
