Shapovalov wins first match ever in Wimbledon main draw

Denis Shapovalov reaches the second round in Wimbledon after a battle. In fact, the 19 years old had a tough opener against an in-form Jeremy Chardy to beat the Frenchman in 4 sets.

The match

Even if the conditions were relatively slow for a match on grass, both players managed not to concede many breaks. In fact, each set was decided by just 1 break. The crucial moments were when Chardy folded to the pressure to concede the decisive break at the end of both the 3rd and the 4th set.

Eventually, Denis won the match 6-3 3-6 7-5 6-4 after scoring 130 points vs. Chardy’s 115.

Next vs. Paire.

Denis will face another Frenchman in the 2nd round. Benoit Paire. Even if Benoit is playing well on grass, he is struggling a lot with his knee, and this should play as a great advantage for Shapovalov. The head to head is 1-0 for the Canadian that had a tough win against Paire back in Madrid in May (7-6 4-6 6-4).
