Simona Halep’s first slam title should be something that gives only happiness for how it was achieved.

In fact, the Romanian won her first major after working hard and overcoming the disappointment of losing the previous 3 slams finals. Interesting enough, some “journalist” managed to use this great achievement to insult an entire nation with one intent: grabbing some headlines.

Charlie Hebdo’ senseless cartoon

However, Charlie Hebdo came out with a completely senseless cartoon likening Simona to a Gypsy scrap metal collector. The world no.1 was depicted shouting “Old iron! Old iron!” while holding the trophy.

The French Ambassador to Romania

The French ambassador to Romania, Michele Ramis defended “freedom of expression and a free press,” also saying that the cartoon “doesn’t at all represent French public opinion.”

Simona declined to comment.

It’s great to defend the free press; it’s awful to insult an entire nation.
