Serena Williams vs. Maria Sharapova was meant to be one of the most intriguing matches of this French Open.
Unfortunately, Serena had to withdraw almost 1 hour before the contest because of an injury.
What was wrong with Serena
The American revealed her problem during a press conference to say
“Unfortunately, I’m having some issues with my pec muscle. Right now, I can’t actually serve it’s kind of hard to play.
I’m having an MRI tomorrow; I’m going to stay here to see the doctors and see as many specialists as I can. I won’t know [about the injury] until I get those results.”
… and about her disappointment
Then Serena added,
“I gave up so much to time with my daughter and my family and put everything on court for this moment. It’s really difficult to be in this situation, but for now in my life, I just always try to think positively and just think of the bigger picture and hopefully (I can play in) the next events and the rest of the year.
I’m going to continue to get better. I had such a wonderful performance in my first Grand Slam back.”
Apparently, Serena’s injury was sustained in the previous single match against Julia Goerges, and it was aggravated after she decided to compete in doubles the day after with her sister Venus. Eventually, the Williams also lost that match against Andreja Klepac and Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez 6-4 6-7 (4) 6-0 with Serena serving extremely slow.
The real question is: will the American compete in Wimbledon?
