Bianca Andreescu has had a break out year in 2019. The 19-year old won her first Grand Slam title at the US Open, defeating former world number one Serena Williams. The victory capped an impressive run of form with other tournament victories at the Indian Wells and Rogers Cup in Toronto. After beginning the year ranked outside the top 100, the Canadian is currently number 5 on the WTA rankings.
Success and stardom in Canada
Andreescu made history by being the first Canadian tennis player to win a singles Grand Slam title. She has been celebrated in her home country and even had a street named after her in her hometown of Mississauga in Canada. The 19-year-old has also made a new friend since her win, getting congratulations messages from famous Canadian rapper Drake. She has the most wins in the WTA this year and has earned around $6 million in prize money.
THE MISTAKE: Injury in Miami Open
The Grand Slam winner has been reflecting on the spectacular year she has had so far. Andreescu has spoken about an injury she suffered at the Miami Open this year. The injury came after she had won the Indian Wells and she felt that she could also win in Miami. She has since admitted that she should have skipped the event in hindsight. She played at the tournament but retired during a match against Estonian Anett Kontaveit after injuring her right shoulder.
The injury proved to be costly to the 19-year-old. She was unable to compete at the French Open and Wimbledon. After playing many matches at the beginning of the year, Andreescu has admitted that she was tired because of the increased workload. According to Montreal Gazette, she said, “I felt I did play a lot of tennis at the beginning of the year and it accumulated, especially after winning at Indian Wells. Maybe I shouldn’t have played Miami.” She took time off to rest and recover from her injury and came back to win the Rogers Cup in August and the US Open this month.
Now after celebrating her victory in Canada, the world No. 5 is expected back on the WTA tour. She aims to finish the season strong and crack to top three. The current world number five is expected to play at the WTA Premier event in Beijing. Though she says she won’t let her success go to her head, she has expressed confidence heading into Beijing.

Ranked no.5 (career-high), the Canadian played her last match on the 7th of September when she beat Serena Williams 6-3 7-5 in the final in U.S. Open to win her 3rd career title.
This year the Canadian has a 43-4 win-loss record. Andreescu clinched 4 titles in 2019 in the Newport Beach, in Indian Wells, in Toronto and at the U.S. Open. Andreescu was the finalist in Auckland.
