Shapovalov wins 1st match in Madrid in 54 minutes

Denis Shapovalov has a fantastic start in Madrid after he defeated the world no.51 Tennys Sandgren 6-1 6-4 in the opener.

This was a good test for Denis that is not a clay court specialist, but he can take full advantage of the conditions in Madrid where the ball is quite fast because the tournament is played on altitude.

Denis was never troubled during the match against the American especially after he raced to a 5-0 lead in the opening set before winning 6-1. The second set was also quite smooth for the Canadian that conquered the decisive break in the 4th game, and he never conceded more than 2 points on his serve. The match ended after just 54 minutes.

With this win, Denis ends his 3 matches losing streak.

Shapovalov will face either Benoit Paire or Lucas Pouille in the second round.
