Why I do not want to play in Hamburg. ZVEREV

Ranked world no.3, Sascha Zverev is the top German player, and he is always expected to play the home tournaments. This week Zverev is competing in the ATP250 in Munich where he is the seed no.1 and the hot favorite, but he will desert an even more important event later in the year.

In fact, the 21-year-old has decided not to participate in the ATP500 that will take place in Hamburg the 23 to 29 July 2018 for a specific reason.

No hard courts?

During a recent interview, Sascha explained that the problem is the surface and unfortunately the ATP is insisting on playing that event on clay. That doesn’t make much sense for many players that in July are coming after the swing on the grass and they are about to engage in an important stint on hard courts in North America.

Zverev commented

“We will try that Hamburg will become a hard court tournament. I still want the best for the city and the tournament.”

The good news is that at least Dominic Thiem will play, but they need to rethink the all thing and unfortunately the event will be staged on the dirt also in 2019.
