Davis Cup omission sparks speculation
Matteo Berrettini will not feature in Italy’s initial squad for the upcoming Davis Cup Finals, a development that has gained substantial attention amid internet chatter concerning his relationship with Lorenzo Musetti. Italian captain Filippo Volandri opted to name Musetti, Flavio Cobolli, Luciano Darderi, Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori for the Bologna tie against South Korea, leaving the former Wimbledon finalist on the sidelines.
While Volandri has pointed to current rankings as the basis for his sporting decisions, online attention quickly shifted toward rumors of personal tension between Berrettini and Musetti. Those theories gained traction after social media followers noticed changes in the players’ following lists, alongside unsubstantiated claims connecting the situation to Berrettini’s former girlfriend following his breakup earlier this year.
Vienna exchange fuels debate
The chatter intensified following Berrettini’s opening-round win in Vienna, where an interviewer questioned him regarding Musetti capturing the ATP title in Lyon. Berrettini noticeably paused to verify whether the broadcast was running live before addressing his teammate’s success.
“His title in Lyon? I guess he deserves it,” Berrettini stated during the exchange. “I know he worked very hard to come back, and I guess he deserves it.”
Observers quickly scrutinized his reserved demeanor and brief phrasing on camera. Nevertheless, neither player has confirmed any personal dispute, and Italian team officials have made no reference to personal matters playing any role in the final Davis Cup squad selection.
