Are we back to Federer no.1, Nadal no.2, Djokovic no.3?

These three guys are writing an important chapter on the history of tennis. They are just incredible!

Nole has been the super-mega-incredible hero till last Roland Garros where Rafa became (again) the super-hero with his “His7orical” 7th Frech Open under his belt. Then it was time for Roger to get back in style in the headlines with his incredible Wimbledon and no.1 ranking. Now? what’s next?

We have 4 major events in the next 2 months that may bring us back to a “typical old ranking”: Roger no.1, Rafa no.2 and Nole no.3. How is this possible?

The Olympics

The Olympic games shouldn’t mark a great difference because there are no massive points at stakes. Nole could (temporary) get back the world no.1 rank for few points if he obtains a better`placement than Roger. This are the points available for the Olympic Games. (remember that the Serb is only 75 points shy from Roger)

Gold Medal 750
Silver Medal 450
Bronze Medal 340
Loser 3rd/4th 270
Quarterfinals 135
Round of 16 70
Round of 32 35
1st round 5

How can we get to the “old ranking”?

Just have a look at the following 3 major tournaments: the Roger Cup in Toronto, the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati and the US Open.

Nole has a big problem here as he has to defend a whopping 3600 points from last year where he won the US Open (2000 points) and the ATP Master in Canada (1000 points), and he reached the final in Cincinnati (600 points).

Roger has to defend only 990 points as he reached the semis at the US Open (720pt), the round of 16 in Canada (90pt) and the quarters in Cincinnati (180pt).

Rafa has to defend 1390 points as he was the runner-up at the USOpen (1200pt), the round of 32 in Canada (10pt) and the quarters in Cincinnati (180pt).

So to recap the points to defend are as follows

Player -US Open -Canada -Cincinnati Total Points
Djokovic 2000 1000 600 3600
Nadal 1200 10 180 1390
Federer 720  90 180 990

Now we need to have a look at the actual ranking

Federer  11075
Djokovic 11000
Nadal      8905

So if Rafa has decent August scoring slightly more points than Djokovic, and Nole does not have the same crashing performas as last year, we can definately go back to the old:

Federer no.1

Nadal no.2

Djokovic no.3

Of course ther are many variables (one of the most important one is Rafa’s knee) and everything is possible with these 3, but the “Old Ranking” is a very plausible scenario.
