Jelena Ostapenko beats Elina Svitolina in Miami after a huge roller coaster to reach the semifinal.
The serve was definitely not ruling in this heated contest in Florida as 50% of the times either Ostapenko or Svitolina was broken: the match recorded 12 breaks in total!
The contest ended after 1 hour and 48 minutes, and the final score was 7-6 (3) 7-6 (5).
Why so many breaks!
This match was so erratic because Ostapenko decided to play on her own terms and that means that she was going for the kill as soon as she could.
Jelena commented
“Before the match, I knew that I have to be very aggressive. And when I had a chance, I was going for it. Of course, I was missing some because I was trying to play aggressive the whole match, but I think my winners are more than the unforced errors.”
The difference with the other tournaments
Before this event, the Latvian was having a miserable run for her standards in 2018 with a grim 4-7 win-loss record. Ostapenko also confessed that she wasn’t happy with her mindsets during the previous tournaments to say
“I think maybe the other tournaments I was trying to, like, play more balls in the court and without any aggressivity. But now I think I really go for the shot when I need to, and I’m not afraid to risk.”
IN the semifinal, Jelena will face either Venus Williams or Danielle Collins.
