RETIREMENT. Federer explains his plans with the Laver Cup after he retires

The 20-time Grand Slam champion will continue to support the event even after he puts down his tennis racket.

Two years ago, the Laver Cup came into existence. The cup has grown popular since it was first held in Prague in 2017. Players and fans have embraced the tournament which has had some innovative ideas like the black court on which it is played and the point system. There have also been shorter matches in singles and doubles at event with the champions tiebreak. Roger Federer has been among the tournament’s biggest supporters as well as being an organizer in a way. He has played at all Laver Cup events including this year’s cup which is being held in Geneva, Switzerland.

Federer involved from the beginning

The 38-year-old was heavily involved in the creation of the tournament. His management sports group, Team 8, organized the event and competition format. Federer came up with the concept of the cup as a way to honor former tennis players in the game for paving the way. The competition, named after Australian legend Rod Laver has grown popular with fans. The ATP added it to its schedule this year. Fans have witnessed some unique moments such as the first pairing Federer and Rafael Nadal for a doubles match in Prague.

Cup will always be close to me

As Federer draws nearer to the twilight of his career he has stated that he will continue to be involved with the Laver Cup even after he retires. The Swiss has explained that he has been in an extraordinary position of both organizing and playing in the cup. He feels that he will be able to contribute some helpful advice for the growth of the tournament, even after he retires.

The 38-year-old said, “I do not know to what extent I will be involved in the organization. I can also help press, sponsors, players, and fans because I think I can be in one of those positions. But it’s clear the Laver Cup will always be close to me.”

Even at his current age, Federer continues to play great tennis. In his singles match at the Laver Cup against Nick Kyrgios on Saturday, the former world number one defeated the 24-year-old Australian and increased Team Europe’s lead to 7-5 over Team World. The match offered fans with a great moment. During the match, long-time rival and friend, Rafael Nadal, was seen giving instructions and advice to Federer on the sidelines. The two players will team up in a doubles match against Jack Sock and John Isner on Sunday.

Ranked no.3, the Swiss played his last match on the 3rd of September when he was defeated by Grigor Dimitrov 3-6 6-4 3-6 6-4 6-2 in the quarter in U.S. Open.

This year the Swiss has a 43-7 win-loss record. Roger has won 3 titles in 2019 in Dubai, in Miami and in Halle. Federer was the finalist in Indian Wells and in Wimbledon.
