Key Takeaways

  • Alex Michelsen suffered a five-set defeat against Frances Tiafoe after leading by two sets and serving for the match at 5-4 in the third.
  • Tiafoe offered supportive words during an emotional net embrace, with Michelsen admitting: “I was trying to keep it together and I didn’t do a good job of that.”
  • Looking forward, the 22-year-old American remained optimistic about his future: “I’ve got a lot of time to grow physically and mentally and I’m going to be here again. I know it.”

Heartbreak on Arthur Ashe Stadium

Alex Michelsen experienced the full emotional weight of Grand Slam tennis after coming within touching distance of a maiden major semifinal at the US Open. Facing compatriot Frances Tiafoe on Arthur Ashe Stadium in the quarterfinals, Michelsen built a commanding two-set lead before Tiafoe mounted a stirring comeback to prevail 5-7, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3, 7-6(6).

Reflecting on his immediate feelings following the five-set battle, Michelsen was candid about the pain of coming up short. “Yeah, nothing good,” the 22-year-old said. “It’s a tough match, but you know, I fought as hard as I could and you know, it just didn’t go my way today. It got a little tight at 5-4 in the third, but at the end of the day, made my first quarterfinal of a slam.”

The turning point in the third set

Michelsen was serving for the match at 5-4 in the third set when the momentum shifted drastically. Up to that stage, he had controlled proceedings, but missed opportunities allowed Tiafoe to find his footing and feed off the energy of the New York crowd.

“I feel the first three sets I was on top of him. I feel like he didn’t really, you know, he wasn’t playing like Francis,” Michelsen explained. “And then I kind of let him back in at 5-4. And then after that, he was playing like Francis does on Ash. And after that, it was a dog fight.”

Addressing the critical moments when he served for victory, Michelsen admitted the reality of the situation crept into his mind. “You’re four points away from making a semi-final US Open and it’s a horrible way to look at it obviously because can only play one point at a time,” he noted. “I didn’t, you know, sometimes my arm I’m like, ‘Oh, it’s so tight,’ but like I wasn’t that tight and I just kind of missed a couple serves and after I double faults fast, I was like, ‘Oh, here we go. It’s not good.'”

Consolation and perspective for the future

After the final point was played, the two Americans shared an emotional embrace at the net, with Tiafoe offering comforting words to his visibly upset younger opponent.

“I wasn’t saying much. I was trying to keep it together and I didn’t do a good job of that,” Michelsen shared. “No, he was saying a lot of nice personal things. You know, when I’m older, you’re going to be here and we’re going to play again this type of circumstance and all that good stuff. And he’s a great guy for consoling me in that moment.”

Despite the painful nature of the defeat, Michelsen pointed to his growth on the Grand Slam stage and expressed confidence that he will return to the deep end of majors in the years ahead.

“It’s definitely one of the bigger disappointments, but again, I’m just super happy that I showed myself I can make a quarter of a slam and I’m only 22,” Michelsen said. “I’ve got a lot of time to grow physically and mentally and I’m going to be here again. I know it.”
