It’s pretty well known that playing a Davis Cup tie is something that many top players really do not like much for its mental and physical effort. This is especially true if a top player is expected to carry the entire team on his shoulders like in the case of David Goffin with Belgium.
David had to withdraw a few weeks ago from the Rotterdam semifinal after a freak accident that involved him being hit by a tennis ball in his eye.
Eventually, David had also to withdraw from Indian Wells while he is expected to compete in Miami. After that, the Belgian was supposed to play the weekend of the 6-9 April the Davis Cup tie against USA in Nashville but won’t do that because… he needs to see the doctor!
The statement
“Hello everybody,
After these last few days of practice, I have to admit that I haven’t recovered my vision totally. I still need a couple of days to be able to play at 100%. Unfortunately, I won’t be able to play in Indian Wells this year, and I will most likely be back in Miami if the situation evolves favorably. Therefore, I will have to go back to Europe after the Miami Open to check the condition of my eye so I won’t be able to play the next Davis Cup tie against USA. Then I hope to be able to continue the rest of the season serenely. I wish all the very best to the Belgium team!
David “
Of course, David wanted to avoid going back and forth from the US 2 times, but that’s a new one…
