LAVER CUP. Roger Federer and Sascha Zverev cement the lead of Team Europe after an exciting opening day in Geneva.
What happened
Team World put up a really good fight. Denis Shapovalov was inches from winning the opening match against Dominic Thiem, but he couldn’t convert 3 match points to lose the match 5-4 5-7 13-11.
Later on, it was Jack Sock to make it even for Team World (1-1) after beating an ailing Fabio Fognini 6-1 7-6 (3).
In the 3rd match, Stefanos Tsitsipas edged a combative Taylor Fritz 6-2 1-6 10-7. The Greek was ice cold during the crunch time (7-7 in the final breaker) to clinch the last 3 points. That gave a 2-1 lead to Team Europe.
Finally, Roger Federer and Sascha Zverev won the doubles against Jack Sock and Denis Shapovalov 6-3 7-5. (3-1 for Team Europe).
