Tiafoe wins maiden title in Delray Beach

Frances Tiafoe has a fantastic week in Delray Beach to win his maiden title after beating Gojowczyk in the final.

The American had a great run in the US as he managed to beat the likes of Juan Martin Del Potro, Hyeon Chung, and Denis Shapovalov on the way.

The final was one-way traffic with Francis grabbing a 5-0 lead before winning the opener 6-1. The second set was also relatively smooth for Tiafoe that after an exchange of breaks (2-1 2-2, 3-2) he finally won the match 6-1 6-4 after just 61 minutes.

From Sierra Leone to ATP champion

Frances’ parents moved from Sierra Leone to the US to find a better life. Eventually, Tiafoe’s father ended up being a maintenance worker at a Maryland tennis club where Frances got the inspiration to play the sport.

After his win, Frances commented

“Now I’m in a position not only to help myself but help fund my family. It’s an unbelievable place to be in, and it’s bigger than tennis.”

Frances’ father commented “It’s unbelievable. I told them since they were little, work hard, and you can achieve your goal. I told him whatever you put your mind to you can do it.”
