Shapovalov reaches the Delray Beach quarters

Denis Shapovalov keeps on marching in Delray Beach.

The upcoming Canadian reaches the quarters after he had a tough ride in the second round against fellow #nextgen Jared Donaldson. An important moment of the match was when Denis squandered many opportunities to win the first set tiebreak after he was leading 4-1 and he didn’t convert a set point while leading 6-5. Later Shapovalov was great to keep his cool and break Donaldson once per set before winning 6-7 (6) 6-4 6-4.

Mentally I am stronger. SHAPOVALOV

After winning the match, Denis was elated for coming back from 1-set down to comment

“I’ve been in this position before. Last year I was coming out with a lot of Ws in late sets. It’s definitely a big confidence booster for me. I’m starting to get a lot of momentum … Honestly, I think my game has improved a lot from last year. Physically I’m stronger. Mentally I’m stronger. I’m really happy with where I stand right now.”

Next vs. Taylor Fritz

Denis will face another fellow #nextgen in the quarterfinals: Taylor Fritz.

The American and the Canadian have never played each other a pro level. Fritz commented “I haven’t seen Denis play too much since we played in juniors. I know he’s an aggressive player, a good server. I think we both try and play a similar style.”
