Matteo Berrettini is enjoying a remarkable season.
Currently ranked no.13 (career-high) the Italian has won 3 titles in 2019 in Phoenix (Challenger), Budapest and Stuttgart. In addition, Matteo impressed with his run at the recent US Open where he reached the semifinal before surrendering to Rafael Nadal.

The 23-year-old is currently in St. Petersburg where he is playing the local ATP250. Matteo is now in the quarters in Russia and this means that he has gained 25 points in the live rankings to overtake Kei Nishikori in the YTD rankings from next Monday.
If Berrettini wins the title in St. Petersburg, he will have 2390 YTD points. Therefore, the Italian will also have more points than Roberto Bautista Agut in the YTD rankings. The Spaniard is currently the alternate in the Laver Cup so as not to play this week “for points.” Roberto has currently 2350 points in the YTD log.

The Italian will square off with Gerasimov in the quarter. They have never played each so far on the main tour.
The last time that they fought against each other, Berrettini won 7-67 6-3 in the semifinal in Andria Challenger in November 2016.
