This year Grigor Dimitrov didn’t have the same success he enjoyed in 2017 in Australia when he won the tournament in Brisbane, and he lost in the Australian Open semifinal against Rafael Nadal in 5 sets. This year the Bulgarian reached the semifinal in Brisbane where he lost to Nick Kyrgios, and he crashed out in the quarters in the Melbourne at the hands of Kyle Edmund.
Still, Grigor hasn’t recovered yet from the Australian summer, and unfortunately he won’t be able to defend his title in the home tournament in Sofia.
The statement
Grigor released the following statement
“My team and I had to take one of the most difficult decisions – to skip this year’s edition of the tournament in Sofia. Earlier today I had my last medical consultation. Unfortunately, I will not be at 100 percent ready for next week. If I play, it would lead to additional risks and complications.”
Wawrinka in
The tournament has also lost Hyeon Chung that is still recovering from his nasty blister, but at least the organization can smile as Stan Wawrinka has agreed to play. The tournament director Paul McNamee commented, “On the back of disappointing news of Dimitrov injury, great that triple grand slam champion Stan Wawrinka will play Sofia Open.”
