Why Federer will be world no.1 if he wins the Australian Open

As for today,  Andre Agassi has been the oldest world no.1 in tennis history after he regained the top spot in the rankings at 33 years of age, Roger Federer can beat this record if he wins the Australian Open. In fact, if the 36-year-old wins the Australian Open on Sunday, he will be only 155pts away from Rafael Nadal, the current world no.1.

Why Roger will be no.1

Until the grass court season, Federer will have 2045 points to defend, and that would be the 2 titles in Indian Wells (1000pts) and Miami (1000pts), and the 2nd round in Dubai (45pts). The “great news” for the Swiss is that he has no points to defend on clay as the last year he decided to skip the entire season on the dirt.

On the other side, Nadal has to defend 5670pts accumulated in Acapulco (300pts), Indian Wells (90pts), Miami (600pts), Monte Carlo (1000pts), Barcelona (500pts), Madrid (1000pts), Rome (180pts), Roland Garros (2000pts).

Federer could be the world no.1 even before the clay court season if he decides to play in Dubai (26 of February) and he reaches the final. Roger may even opt to play some tournaments on clay to get the points he needs to get back to the top of the rankings.

Still a lot of “IFs”, but if Roger wins this Australian Open he will definitely have the world no.1 rank very close to being back in his pocket.
