Tennis star Daniil Medvedev has been in good form. The 23-year-old is currently fourth on the ATP rankings, the highest ranking of his career so far. The player coached by Giles Cervara has been improving steadily and is seen by many as a potential Grand Slam champion. This year, Medvedev has won the Cincinnati Masters in August and recently reached the US Open final where he was defeated by Rafael Nadal. The Russian’s recent form has improved drastically over the last year and he has credited his wife, Daria, for his performance.

My wife Daria helped me with my confidence

Medvedev and Daria had been dating for four years. The couple tied the knot in September last year. Since then, the 2019 US Open finalist has had a good couple of months. He credits his wife as one of the reasons for his improved play over the last twelve months. “She’s one of the most important members of my team. She gave me a lot of confidence. I always say that it’s the moment I made the proposal to her, that’s when I started to go up.”

A rise in the rankings

Now ranked fourth, the 23-year-old admits that his rise in the rankings has not been a coincidence after the couple’s wedding. “It was at this moment – it was after Wimbledon – I was, I think, 65 or something like this, and at the end of the year, I was already 15.” Medvedev is grateful he has someone in his life to take care of the little things as he focuses on playing tennis. “She does a lot for me in order for me to play better tennis. I’m talking about small things in life that would take my attention, she cares about them, and I just have to play tennis and win some matches.”

Daria also played tennis

Daria also played tennis and according to Medvedev, she was good. “She played tennis until 18 years of age herself, and she did not do too bad.” The Russian revealed that his wife was highly ranked and her knowledge of tennis has helped him improve as a player. “I will not mention her junior rankings but she was on the top 100. Maybe even higher, No. 50 or 60.”
