Mischa Zverev receives a massive fine at the Australian Open

Weird stuff in Melbourne as Mischa Zverev, one of the most serious guys on tour, is fined for lack of effort.

What happened

The German withdrew against Hyeon Chung in the first round when he was losing 6-2 4-1. Apparently, he was struggling, and he couldn’t complete the match; for this reason, he received a massive fine of AUS45,000 that is USD 36,000 or 75% of his prize money.

Why the fine?

According to the new rules “any player who competes in the first-round main draw singles and retires or performs below professional standards, may now be subject to a fine up to (the equivalent) first round prize money in 2018”.

Difficult to think as Mischa Zverev as unprofessional.
