Edmund upsets Dimitrov to reach the semi in Melbourne

The British tennis is very well represented in Melbourne even with Andy Murray and Jo Konta out.

In fact, Kyle Edmund surprises the tennis world after reaching the semifinals following his win over Grigor Dimitrov.

The Bulgarian was the hot favorite to win this quarterfinal, but he knew that beating Edmund would not have been easy after he recently edged the Brit in Brisbane early in the month after winning 6-3 6-7 (3) 6-4.

Kyle started the match against the world no.3 in the best possible way with a break (1-0). Grigor managed to get back that break in the 6th game (3-3), but he was the Brit again to break Dimitrov in the 9th game before winning the opener 6-4.

Dimitrov had a solid start in the 2nd set (3-0) before winning 6-3. At that point it seemed as the Bulgarian had the match in his pocket; the couple went toe to toe in the 3rd set, but it was Dimitrov to drop his serve once again in the 8th game (3-5) before losing the set 6-3.

Once more Kyle and Grigor engaged in a tough battle in the 4th set. Dimitrov was broken in the 5th game (2-3) to break back soon after (3-3). Finally, it was a more aggressive Edmund to find his way again and break Dimitrov in the 9th game for the 5th time before winning the contest 6-4 3-6 6-3 6-4.

Stats

Even if Grigor scored just 4 points less than Edmund (118 vs.122), he was far too passive (32 winners vs. Edmund’s 46), and his serve didn’t really work well (7 double faults and only 7 aces).

Edmund will now face either Cilic or Nadal in the semifinal.
