Dimitrov beats Rublev to avenge US Open defeat

Mission accomplished for Grigor Dimitrov.

The world no.3 had a tough test ahead to face a sticky Andrey Rublev in the Australian Open 3rd round under a punishing sun. The Bulgarian had a below-par performance in the previous round to beat the world no.186 Mackenzie Mcdonald 8-6 in the 5th set after playing terrible tennis.

Grigor found his way back against Rublev even if he still didn’t play at his very best after committing 15 double faults (61 unforced errors). However, that was good enough especially because the match was played in extreme heat). Dimitrov won 6-3 4-6 6-4 6-4.

Happy even if something is not working. DIMITROV

After the match, Grigor was extremely happy for winning to comment

“These are the most important matches for me when things are not working, and I’m able to find a way. I knew what to expect. I knew what I had to do, but certain things in my game are not working at the moment. I’m just pleased to win the match.

Physically, I’m feeling pretty good. The heat didn’t scare me today so that a good sign. I just have to stay calm and composed, I guess.’’

Grigor will face either Nick Kyrgios or Jo-Wilfried Tsonga for a place in the quarters.
